H1N1 Influenza (Swine Flu)

Countries around the world are reporting confirmed cases of H1N1 Influenza, previously referred to as swine flu. In the United States, most cases have been mild and the majority of patients have recovered without requiring any medical treatment.

The H1N1 Virus is becoming more prevalent and one of the most "at-risk" groups of people are students in colleges and universities like our entire undergraduate body.  As many of our charges are housed, there is a serious chance that if one brother is infected he can easily spread it not only to the entire charge, but also to people passing in and out of the charge house.  This also means that a non-brother can bring H1N1 into your house just as easily. We urge you to follow the links below to the Centers for Disease Control website about the H1N1 Virus and protect yourself and your brothers.

What you can do now:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and dispose of the tissue in the trash. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth since germs are spread in this way.
  • Avoid contact with individuals who have flu-like symptoms. Flu is spread from person to person by coughing and sneezing.
  • If you get sick, stay home. Limit contact with others to avoid infecting them.
